PAINTING ABSTRACTION ................FEAR NOT!

Why? Because the best abstract art has the power to cut through the rigid conventions of direct representation and externalize interior essences – to show us things are not as they look, but as they are. There is a notable safety and relaxation in working the paint, its colors & textures & shapes, when the experience is unfettered by “things.” There is also an honesty that derives from the interior momentum for expression. That inner sense goes out and comes back in reflection to meet one's deeper self. No experience required.

5 FRIDAY MORNINGS–APRIL 5,12, 19, 26, 9:00 until 11:30am – $225

SUMMER CLASSES FOR 2011

LAYERING

Building veils of transparent or opaque color, we will create visual stories of the painting process. Not that the painting experience be literal or representational, but like Lillian Hellman described in the work of "pentimento" - the evidence of previous work, or LAYERS, will comprise a deepened and integrative picture. Modern art draws from this premise and boldly invites the painter to build plane upon plane and re-announce background details to the foreground. There are few rules. It's exploratory and revealing. The inescapable pathway of the indiviual and collective Psyche emerges. What a great way to learn about oneself! No experience required. Acrylic medium will be the preferred paint along with all sorts of "junk" and memorabilia.

The class will be offered on Tuesday evenings and again on Thursday mornings. Six consecutive sessions starting in late July. Cost $180. Bring a buddy, and recieve a 20% discount for yourself.

OTHER DETAILS

Classes are small, no more than 6.
$100 deposit due by July 18.

SPRING CLASSESS FOR 2011

MORE TEXTURE!

Easy and fun! The experience draws you in with the moving paint and its zone of playfulness. Acrylic-based medium with

all sorts of odds and ends makes your creative recipe original and delight-filled. This approach to non-representational

painting trumps the critical mind and ushers in new & unfettered possibilities. The spring class will go on from the previous

ones with new materials. The more you are an open-hearted beginner, the better. No previous experience required.
Eight Tuesday evenings from 7 - 9:30, starting April 5. Cost $250

MONSTERS!

The monsters of childhood nightmares have an uncanny way of enduring. As well, we revisit these demons upon entry to

holy spaces .Shadowy images do not vanish; we must face them with their urges toward addiction, self-hatred,

perfectionism, jealousy, oranything that's dragging you down. Resisting does not work. We will create a place where safet

y and visibility liberate these patterns instead of leaving them to their invisible force. Beyond personifying monsters, this

group will borrow from Tsultrim Allione's brilliant 5 step guidein FEEDING YOUR DEMONS. There is surely a playful and

imaginative freedom in this work although it is more.
Eight Thursday evenings from 7 - 9:30, starting April 7. Cost: $250

TEXTURE: GOING FOR IT WITH ACRYLICS - TUES. EVENINGS 7 - 9:30PM (Jan.4, 11, 18, 25, Feb.1, 8, 15, 22)

Digging, scratching, printing, layering, collaging, scribbling, writing, inventing ways to build texture with
acrylic paints. Ecstatic or serene, rabid or sunken, the language of texture invites playfulness and freedom.
The willingness to engage in the paste-like nature of the medium is the only prerequisite. No experience required.

A weekly immersion into non-analytic/right brain awareness as the present moment takes the lead. A contemplative
approach in watching the mind as the brush moves in its unique way. Practice in the essential Now deepens self-
confidence and discourages judgement. An enriching journey for growth and self-acceptance.

Find out what happens with creamy paints, with lines and shapes, with open spaces, and great permission. This is a
supportive class for the new risks of self-expression and non-representational form. Along the way, reference will
be made to some of the pioneers in abstraction like Kandinsky, Picasso, Joan Mitchell, and Motherwell. Primarily, we
have fun and learn by doing.

2010 WORKSHOPS

4th of JULY PAINTING WORKSHOP

"Let freedom ring!"

This 4th of July weekend, we will enter the domain of paint and its potential. Of

course, the experience is about you and your potential. Here the medium, luscious

colors, the contours of scratches, scribbles, & scraps.

The Saturday and Sunday event is primarily for beginners, although experience is

not a limitation. In a light and friendly studio environment, we will create, reflect, &

share. The concept of freedom is not theme specific, rather an invitation to be as you

wish.

Julia Schwab has been painting since 6th grade. Since then she has

matured in some ways although making colors swirl and brush

twirl have lent an unfettered honesty to her work. She respects

technique although she has a strong anti-authority side. Her career as

an Art Therapist is well-seasoned and of depth and duration. For more

BEGINNER'S PAINTiNG OR MEETING UNCERTAINTY WITH DELIGHT

Picasso said that to paint like a child was his goal, which  is far from easy for many adults. In

that spirit, without representation or  particular  destination, we will be painting with creamy

& dreamy colors. Acrylics on  tar paper! Here the mind ceases judging, entering instead into

active curiosity  Classes meet in small groups in a friendly Boulder studio for two and a half

hours per week for 10 weeks, Tuesday mornings or Thursday evenings. The fee will be $300.

Dates: Tuesday mornings, starting Sept. 8 - Nov.17,   9:30 - 12:00 Thursday evenings. Starting

Sept.10 - Nov. 19. 7:00 - 9:30 303-442-3005

Obvioulsy, any level of experience is acceptablefor this experimental format.

CONTAINING AND NOT CONTROLLING

The bright and creamy acrylic paint on sturdy paper is a sense-oriented experience, and the

representation [of  a "thing"] falls to the wayside. We deal with the  unknown along the way.

The finished products resemble modern art, very subjective and non-formulaic. Exploring and

experimenting followed by organizing, we find shapes  & texture in relationships - and they're

stories we know that are strikingly familiar!  The energy builds as we move into wholeness.

Creativity abounds with the newness of this process.  We have fun in a spacious and safe studio

environment.Thursday evenings 7 - 9:30 Classes start the week of June 15. My studio is located

in Boulder. And the price is $200 for 6 two and a half hour classes. Materials will run you about $35.

all soon to secure a place.  My number is 303-442-3005

ONE STROKE AT A TIME

Our focus this spring will be Intuitive, the non-deliberating possibilities that move from second

experimental directions. Two or three dimensional pieces are okay........anything is okay, as

the rules we use are our own! No experience required.

Schedule & Fees

     Thursday evenings  7pm 'til 9:30pm......................................$230 (7 meetings)
